Introduction
This Veterans Day, to honor our vets, we made this visualization to remind people of the high rate of suicide for veterans. As you take time to thank veterans for their service today, remember that their mental health is an important aspect of their life you can help with. Information about what you can do to specifically help veterans is available from the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline or the VA.
If you or someone you know is considering suicide, please seek help. Veterans can receive help from the VA. Anyone can reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 or chat online.
Data Notes
The data for this visualization comes from the 2019 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs publishes this report each year to provide statistics to aid in preventing suicide. After I downloaded the data and cleaned what we needed in Excel, we used Tableau to create the timeline.
